Trip to China - 5

china-7.jpgThe next port of call was Taian. This is a small city at the base of one of Chinas holiest mountains. In Tai'an there is a fine old Temple, the Dai Miao the traditional starting point for the accent of the mountain Tai Shan, where emperors once made sacrifices and offerings to the mountain. The Dai Miao is a magnificent structure with towering old trees including some fine ancient Ginkgo biloba trees, commonly known as the Maidenhair tree. It is extinct in the wild but still flourishes in temple gardens throughout China. I had never seen Ginkgo's of this size before akin to really large oak trees in Ireland. They were magnificent trees ,and I vowed that I would plant them whenever I could in future planting schemes Within the temple walls are various classic Chinese style gardens including a formal Peony garden consisting of both herb and tree peony .
