Trip to China - 2

china-2.jpgOn arriving at the garden I was presented with a Peony crown, to put on my head, and the fragrance was superb creating a heady scent. I was in the country of the Mudan. There were street traders selling all sorts of peony oddities from seeds, to decks of cards, devoted to the various varieties of peonies, there was even a local brand of cigarettes called the Lu Mudan I was given a personal tour of the Gardens by general manager Mr Xu Shu Lin and Wang Hong Xian who showed me the many varieties on show, including a group of seedlings from outer space. china5.jpgThe seeds of these plants had been sent up into space on a Chinese space flight, and had spent a couple of days in orbit, the plants had not flowered yet so there is great anticipation as to see what they will turn out like! Unfortunately it was true and most of the Tree peonies had finished flowering, and I was too early to see the herbaceous peonies which were not flowering yet, however there was an overlap and still plenty to see.
